Everything you ever wanted to know about Brazilian waxes…

Brazilian waxing popularized around the string bikini.

As you might have guessed, brazilian waxing got its name after becoming popular on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the 1970’s when thong and micro bikinis hit the sand as a new fashion trend. How does a brazillian wax (or All Off as we call it) differs from a regular bikini wax? Basically, with the Brazilian, hair is removed in the front, back and everything in between. Some times a “landing strip” is left in the front, but a lot of clients also opt for everything removed.

This waxing craze made its way to the U.S. in the 1980’s when seven brazilian sisters set up shop in New York City. The Padilha sisters or the “J sisters” (Jocely, Jonice, Joyce, Janea, Jussara, Juracy, and Judsela) as they came to be known, opened a waxing studio that offered the brazilian wax service – a wax technique that would remove all of the hair from the bikini area.

Fast forward to today and the brazilian, along with bikini waxing, in general, is likely the most famous wax service. Even men now get in on the wax action, requesting the manzilian (see our article). That’s right hairless is even popular with the men.

How Does It Work:

1. You’ll remove your pants and underwear, lie on a waxing table.

2. Because you only need a quarter-inch of hair for the wax to grab, your therapist may trim pubic hair.

3. The wax will either be from a pot of hot wax and then spread it onto your skin and hair. Or if Sugaring, a ball of sugar wax will be used.

4. Waxing usually starts at the back and moves towards the front. You’ll be asked to hug your knee into your chest. Trust us, the ass and asshole is really easy. Since the Brazilian means everything off, don’t be surprised when the technician removes the hair between the buttock crack and almost into your asshole. You may have to roll over on stomach or hike your ass for prime access.

5. Then on your back you will bend your knee out to each side for access to every crevasse. Your therapist will pull your skin tight and expose your labia for a smooth finish.

6. Once the waxing is complete we apply a soothing lotion to the area then we leave you to get dressed. Typically, you’ll need to wax every 4-6 weeks and the more you do it, the less painful it becomes.

7. Always exfoliate and moisturize to prevent ingrown hairs and dry skin. By following this advice you can be sure you will get the best brazilian wax every time!

Is Everybody Doing It?

Style icon and former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham has said she believes Brazilian waxing should be “compulsory” for people older than 15. Women mostly agreed: Today full-frontal waxing and shaving is more popular than ever. Indiana University researched pubic grooming and published a survey which found that nearly 62 percent of women aged 18 to 55 enjoy bare down there and even 60% of women aged 25-29 were “sometimes, or always, completely bare” in the pubic area. Women younger than 24 were significantly more likely to have opted for a Brazilian or a full shave, particularly if they were white and college educated, the researchers found. Also researchers in Georgia found that 60 percent of college men surveyed preferred a hair-free partner, while 34 percent of college women said the same.

Does Bare Equal Better Sex?

With more porn than ever combined with sexting, partners are more vocal than every about their grooming preferences. Both sexes are more genital aware than ever before. So, is all this shaving and waxing making for a better time in the bedroom? It’s not immediately clear. Researchers found that women who groomed their pubic hair reported being more satisfied with their sex lives than those who didn’t. But one study also notes that as Brazilian waxing has increased in popularity, more young women are faking orgasms with their partners—69 percent in 2013, compared with less than half in the early 1990s. Meanwhile, a researcher at the University of Michigan found that when asked to talk about good sex, college men are likely to talk about pleasure while women are likely to use their partners’ satisfaction to measure their own. “Genital self-image” is a real thing — how people feel about their genitalia. Women’s feelings about their private parts can affect how much pleasure they get from sex.

Is hairless going to get you more oral sex? If your partner is into eating your pussy, a little hair isn’t going to deter that. In our experience though, being smooth is a bonus for oral sex. Being able to run your tongue all over and around smoothly is a winner for both parties involved. Smooth skin is just more sensitive to touch. There’s a reason we shave our legs, so let’s not stop there.

DIY?

If you’re attempting going hairless DIY style, then we suggest the sugaring. It is slightly easier to do yourself and produces less mess. If you’re lucky you can get your partner involved in either shaving or sugaring you. We recommend going the professional route first and then gradually see if the DIY method is appealing.
